Hope this finds you enjoying the beginning of your fall, (though it definitely does not feel like fall yet here in Florida!) Just wanted to give you some updates on what has been going on, I know it has been awhile since my last email...
A Commission Summer...
Thanks so much for an amazing summer! I was able to complete 30 commissions and I still have 8 on a waiting list! I really had a blast working with customers via phone, facebook, email and in person on special works of art to commemorate trips, people, life events, etc. Lots of engagements, weddings, vacations, and birthdays- I felt like I got to be a part of each person's life and it was such a rewarding experience. Thank you so much for all of your support, compliments and patience.
Even though it was a pretty amazing summer and I loved having so much time in my studio, I was so ready to get back to teaching. I am now teaching art to 5th-9th grade students, which was a little change (I miss my little ones). I am happy to have a new classroom and to be able to see the students everyday of the week! This has made it so much easier to do some of the integration projects I had planned. I am actually presenting one of last year's projects at the state conference for the Florida Art Education Association in Oct. "Teaching the Elements and Priniciples of Art through Designing and Planting a Sustainable Landscape."
This year, as I mentioned in my last email, I am working on collaborating with The Expedition Florida 500 and Justin Riney as he paddles around the state for its 500th anniversary inspiring floridians to make a difference in conserving of beloved waters. The 7th grade students and I have been working on a unit that we are calling "Refocusing Fame and Influence for GOOD." We are focusing on researching and following people through social networks who are making a difference in ocean conservation. People that inspire us to also make a difference in the world. I think this is really important when young people are so interested in celebrities, but may be influenced by some that lack integrity and morals. I have been posting updates on Carly Mejeur Marine Life Artist Page on Facebook if you want to follow along. The students are currently learning some Graphic Design techniques, and will be making posters for the school to show off the new heroes they have researched! Mother Ocean and XF500 will be offering posters of my painting of Justin in the next couple weeks, and when you purchase one for $30, a free one will go to a Florida school with the integrated lesson plans we are creating- definitely stay tuned for that!
Some other collaborations include:
~ RidingWater.com, a brand new site for creative surfers to connect, just did an interview with me for their Artist of the Month, and you should definitely check out their site, I am really excited to see how it grows and develops.
~I will also be working on a painting soon for the 2014 Beneath the Waves Film Festival that will be in Jacksonville, FL so I hope you all can make it! Check their site for more info, it is an amazing organization that I am so proud to be painting for and involved with.
~Also, as you may have seen on Facebook, I am working with some other local artists, designers and photographers involved in the ocean and travel: underwater photographer, Chelsea Erwin, bikini designer, Danielle Horangody of Fayette bikinis, and photographer/videographer, Micah Kvidt. We have a couple fun projects starting that I will keep you posted on, but in the mean time you should definitely check out their sites to learn more about these great people!
Upcoming Shows and Events...
~The Show Calendar is up and current, I will continue to post shows as I hear from the Juries. I am trying to exhibit at one show a month during the school year, so that I can still stay focused on teaching. I hope I see you at the first show of the season, Oct. 5th in Melbourne, FL!
~Force-E is also celebrating September as Shark Month and along with some awesome speakers and dive trips, there will be a party at the end of the month to celebrate! Sept. 28th, Force-E Pompano will have food, music, a presentation, raffle and silent auction. I will be there to enjoy the festivities and donate some of my artwork to the raffle and auction. Proceeds will be going to Shark Savers.
~Last but not least, Sept. 21st is International Coastal Clean-up Day! Check out this website to get involved and help collect data on the kinds of debris you find during your service to the ocean. I am trying to round up some middle schoolers with my co-worker, and Blue Friend, Steve Allen, so we will see you there!
Hope to see you at some shows or events soon, and I hope you are all enjoying the ocean in some way this winter!
Please stay in touch with me on Facebook or Instagram to see the latest paintings and more frequent updates.
